AEROGEL – A Miracle of Science!

Aerogel is a synthetic porous ultralight material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas.

From the Stone-Age to the 21stCentury the humans want luxury, they want everything in easy ways. Their eagerness towards luxury made them to discover new things. The early men uses stones to hunt small animals but with time they start using sticks with pointed tip and then they discovered the bow and arrow as a weapon.

In the way towards discovery we discovered a material, very unique in look and properties. Especially its properties are very strange. The special thing about this material is that it is made up of 99.8% air but still is stronger than steel and lighter than air. It has incredibly  low density; In short it is science wonder!!

This material was created by the great scientist Samuel Stephens Kistler in 1931 and was named ‘AEROGEL.  It means that this material was discovered a decade ago but still most of us don’t know about this material. Scientists say this material is the most powerful one on the planet. It’s amazing capability says that it can support thousand times heavier material than its own weight. It’s properties include thermal, acoustical and electrical insulation properties so it can block out intense heat, cold and sound. It does not seem so strong because of its transparent looks and 1000 times less density than glass. It has amazing absorbing abilities to. Because of its high thermal insulation property its melting point is 1200o C. Even after a decade, this is the most influenced material of 21st century.

It’s amazing properties excite everyone to use it  in different places like- it can be used in granular form to add insulation to a roof window. NASA uses Aerogel to trap space dust particles and in space suits for thermal insulation. DUNLOP uses this material in the mould of its new series of tennis racquets and has previously used it in squash racquets.

This amazing thing can be used anywhere. Scientists are still researching on this material, and trying to remove the bluish color and make it more transparent. On the whole, this stuff is super-cool and has the power to change the world with a new vision.
